Our client approached us after purchasing a home in east Bellevue. The home enjoys sweeping views of Lake Sammamish and the Cascade Mountains from the kitchen, dining area, and deck. The client hoped to achieve two main goals with this project; effortlessly connect the indoors and outdoors for the family to enjoy, and update some of the cold, modern finishes in the home to create a more traditional, European feel in the home.
On the exterior of the home, we squared off the back to create space for a 12’ wide double slider and centered stairs so that the flow between the living space, deck, and yard are more direct. A new, larger composite deck replaced the existing deck that was in disrepair. An 8’ slider provides quick access to the deck from the kitchen while flooding the space with light and gorgeous views. Aside from the new sliding doors, 6 new/larger windows also bring in light and the outdoor views. Extending the existing roof created a large, covered portion of the deck to maximize use even during rainy times, while skylights ensure plenty of light to the area.
This project plays with a juxtaposition of modern and traditional design elements. On the deck we juxtapose a modern glass railing (to maximize the view) with traditional lantern light fixtures. The similar black with glass look complements each other and work well together in the space.
Inside, squaring off the end of the home eliminated pinch points in the dining area and created a corner for sitting and enjoying the view. The client loves taking in the water, mountain, and tree views from all angles of the new space! We achieved an update in the kitchen without changing any cabinets, counters, or appliances! A new, custom backsplash, extended hardwood floors, and light fixtures give the kitchen a softer and more traditional feel. The larger windows make doing dishes so much more enjoyable!
Working on this project was a true delight. We love helping our clients find achievable ways to realize their goals for their homes. In this case, larger windows and sliding doors improve the connectivity between the everyday living space and the outdoors. Adding square footage to the dining room corner of the home promotes seamless flow in the home as well as to the new deck. It gives an opportunity to highlight the amazing views of the beautiful PNW all throughout main floor kitchen dining living areas. Updating flooring, lighting, and tile gave the client the ability to express their design style so the home feels truer to them.
